O Mysterium, Ensemble Correspondances new recording

correspondances-mysteriumDu Mont: Motets & Élévations for the Chapel of Louis XIV

Ensemble Correspondances
Sébastien Daucé, organ & direction

Label: harmonia mundi
Ref: HMC902241
Format: 1 CD
Release date: 29nd April 2016

For 20 years (from 1663 to 1683) Henry Du Mont directed the music of the Sun King’s chapel. For the daily Mass there he built up a new repertory consisting of motets for full chorus and more intimate pieces for solo voices. The former aimed to transpose to the context of ‘ordinary’ the format of the large-scale works conceived for extraordinary  ceremonies. Sébastien Daucé presents an innovative approach to these grands motets, that at once links specific musical features with historical data, for each of which he adopts a specific instrumental scoring.

World premiere recording of Benjamin Godard’s Mélodies

benjamin-godard-melodieBenjamin GODARD: Mélodies
World premiere recording

Tassis Christoyannis, baritone
Jeff Cohen, piano

Label: Aparté
Ref: AP123
Format: 1 CD
Release date: 22nd April 2016

The mélodies of Benjamin Godard (1849-1895) are little known even by specialists of the genre. Yet Godard was prolific and most of his output came at a key moment in his evolution, around 1870. After the success of his dramatic symphony ‘Le Tasse’ in 1878, Godard was monopolised by the opera and composed several lyric works that overshadowed the 162 published songs, one of the most interesting parts of his catalogue.
The pieces selected here by Tassis Christoyannis and Jeff Cohen, most of them recorded for the first time, illustrate the composer’s literary sensibility (Jean de La Fontaine, Théophile Gautier, Victor Hugo, Charles Baudelaire…) which he reveals in all their beauty.
