Oscar Strasnoy’s “Comeback” at the Berlin Staatsoper
“A moment ago I was the focus… and now?” Tilla Durieux once enjoyed enormous success on stage. Years later, everything has changed. After the suicide of her husband Paul Cassirer and the Nazi’s rise to power, Tilla leaves Germany and spends several difficult years in Croatia before returning to her homeland seven years after the end of the war. Emil Jannings, a once successful silent-film actor, now faces questions from his nephew Jörg about his actions during Nazi rule, relying on his acting background to avoid answering. A biographical ping-pong between seemingly different characters who in possess, in fact, close ties, the central theme of Strasnoy’s latest opera. The work was commissioned by the Berlin Staatsoper as the season opener for the Schiller-Theater Werkstatt.
The event is dedicated to Jens Schroth.
